Abstract 1336 A Meta-Analysis on the Efficacy of Intra-Articular Viscosupplementation Therapy for Knee Osteoarthritis

HK Choi, A Modawal, M Ferrer, JA Caron Boston, MA, Cincinnati, OH, Barcelona, Spain, Bethesda, MD

Caron etal reviewed 7 randomized, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trials to evaluate the efficacy of intra-articular viscosupplementation therapy in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Using the pain visual analogue scale (VAS), viscosupplementation therapy (5 trials with hyaluronan and 2 with hylan G-F 20) significantly relieved pain compared to placebo in patients at 5-10 weeks (5 trials analyzed) after injection, but not at week 1 (7 trials analyzed).
