Geis etal assessed the incidence of serious upper gastrointestinal (UGI) events in 14 controlled, double-blind trials involving a total of 11, 008 rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis patients. Trials ranged from 2 to 24 weeks and patients received either placebo (n=1864), celecoxib (25 to 400 mg BID; n=6376) or a comparator NSAID (naproxen 500 mg BID, diclofenac 50-75 mg BID, or ibuprofen 800 mg TID; n=2768). 11 of 101 potential UGI events were judged to be clinically significant, ie. perforation, bleeding, and gastric outlet obstruction.
