Abstract 323 Subchondral tibial bone mineral density predicts joint space narrowing at the medial femoro-tibial compartment in patients with knee osteoarthritis
Bruyere O, Lambert V, Dardenne C, et al.

The study was a descriptive study of the relationship between subchondral tibial BMD and medial femoral-tibial JSN 1 year later. Thirty-one patients who met ACR criteria for knee OA were age 56-74 years with a mean BMI of 28.4 kg/m2. Baseline BMD and JSN independently predicted progression of JSN. Those with the highest quartile of BMD (>0.96g/cm2) narrowed by 0.13 mm.

Editorial Comment: Subchondral tibla BMD may be used to predict JSN in patients with OA.

Abstract 292 Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in Patients with Hand Osteoarthritis
B. Slatkowsky-Christensen, R Orstavik, TK Kvein

A case-control study was conducted to determine whether women with hand OA (n=175) have higher BMD than controls of comparable age (n=175), and whether a relationship is contingent upon co-existent large joint OA. Patients and controls were 50-70 years old, 26%-30% smokers, with a trend towards a higher proportion of OA patients on estrogen replacement therapy.

Results:Femoral neck, total hip and lumbar spine BMD were significantly higher in women with hand OA than controls (p <0.05). However, the 2 groups did not differ with regard to the proportion of subjects that met WHO criteria for osteoporosis. The observed relationship was not attributable to coexistent large joint OA. Furthermore, the observed difference was not attributable to symptom duration.

Editorial Comment: The relationship between OA and BMD applies to hand OA This cross-sectional study does not allow determination of causation. Physical activity and occupational data were not available.
