Thumb arthritis and hyaluronic acid injections

Question  I have severe osteo in my body. My right thumb joints are bone on bone. I have had several injections but with no help. Can the rooster cone injections help or is there another alternative to surgery? That is my next treatment option the doctor says.

Answer

HI Gail,

Usually once there is progression of arthritis to bone-on-bone, surgery is the most effective treatment.  Injections of hyaluronic acid are of limited value in bone-on-bone, end-stage joints.  Plus, most of the injections are in doses more appropriate for the big joints (knees, for example).   Good luck !!
