See our article on gout on this site. There is a brief list of foods that are high in purines, which are made into uric acid by the body. Uric acid crystals cause gout. Although avoiding foods high in purines help, since 80% of the uric acid in the body is made by the normal turnover of tissues, there is only so much diet helps. It also is hard to change dietary habits. So, proper use of uric acid lowering drugs such as allopurinol is key to the prevention of gout. |
