Infliximab for AS

I've been suffering from AS for the last 5 years. Does Infliximab permanently cure AS or is it somethin' that has to be used lifelong? Is it an oral medication? Are there any side effects? Where in India can I get Infliximab? Can I take it on my own or do I need to consult a rheumatologist? |

Infliximab (Remicade) is an antibody against tumor necrosis factor (TNF). TNF is an important medicator of inflammation in many types of arthritis including RA, AS, psoriatic arthritis. Infliximab is given by IV infusion and is approved in the US for treatment of RA. Studies in AS are underway but it looks very promising. Enbrel another TNF inhibitor will likely be approved for AS very soon. Neither Enbrel or Remicade are cures for AS or RA but help control the signs and symptoms. They both appear to be highly effective but costly-- about $12,000 per year. I do not know if it is available in India but I would imagine that cost is major factor. |
