Immunex Corporation and Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals recently announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Enbrel for the treatment of moderately to severely active polyarticular-course juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) in patients with inadequate response to one or more disease modifying medicines. JRA affects children before the age of sixteen and can cause deformity, joint pain, stunted growth and increased mortality. (see Clinical Classification Criteria for JRA)
